Collaborative Projects with Japanese UCCN Cities

Each of the member cities of the UCCN runs its own creative and cultural initiatives at the same time as organising various joint initiatives through the medium of the network.

In addition to international collaborative projects, Sapporo also conducts domestic projects together with the UCCN member cities of Japan.

Member cities of Japan and their respective fields:

  • Sapporo, Hokkaido - Media Arts
  • Hamamatsu, Shizuoka - Music
  • Nagoya, Aichi - Design
  • Kobe, Hyogo - Design
  • Asahikawa, Hokkaido - Design
  • Yamagata City, Yamagata - Film
  • Tsuruoka, Yamagata - Gastronomy
  • Kanazawa, Ishikawa - Crafts and Folk Art
  • Tamba-Sasayama, Hyogo - Crafts and Folk Art
  • Usuki, Oita - Gastronomy

Sapporo hosted three such domestic collaborative projects in 2021.

*Usuki joined the network in November 2021 and as such did not participate in the following projects.

Public Online Discussion "Creative City Collaboration Strategy Discussion: Asahikawa x Kobe x Sapporo" (17th Dec 2021)

Three Japanese creative cities (Kobe, Asahikawa, and Sapporo) took part in a public online discussion with the goal of considering specific spaces and human resources to be used for collaboration. The participants shared examples of how they have worked together in the past and reviewed how they could work together in future.

The following representatives led the discussion:

  • Mr. Hirokazu Nagata - Director of KIITO Design And Creative Center Kobe
  • Mr. Akio Ichinomiya - Manager, Asahikawa City Economic Department Industry Promotion Division
  • Mr. Takuro Iwata - Technical Director of Sapporo Cultural Arts Community Center SCARTS

The session was moderated by Mr. Shinobu Kajita, Director of Sapporo’s Inter x cross Creative Center. Examples were given of the initiatives in each city and in the latter half, the three participants discussed how their cities could cooperate and collaborate with each other in future.

Special Publication Exhibit (9th - 21st Dec 2021)

In tandem with the online discussion, a publication exhibit was held at the Sapporo Municipal Library and Information Center, in which literature representing all 9 Japanese creative cities (in Oct 2021) and their respective fields was displayed. Various materials were on display such as reports, collection works, and pamphlets in order to better inform the public on each city.

Screening of Introductory Video (9th - 21st Dec 2021)

A video feature introducing the Japanese member cities was also aired on the large-scale signage on the first floor at the special publication exhibit. The video presented the events and landscapes that symbolise each city.
