On the 14th Dec 2022 in Manila, the International Conference on Creative Cities was hosted by the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts), the Filipino inter-agency commission that coordinates cultural policies and programmes. Sapporo was delighted to have been invited to be an online speaker in order to further promote and expand the UCCN.

The conference was held in hybrid format over the course of one day, with the purpose of bringing together international creative cities to share their knowledge and to identify potential creative cities in the Philippines that integrate cultural ingenuity and creativity into sustainable growth and development.

Creative cities from six differing fields presented their experiences on "Good Practices, Impacts, and Challenges of Becoming a UNESCO Creative City":

  1. Wonju, South Korea (Literature)
  2. Terrassa, Spain (Film)
  3. Cebu, Philippines (Design)
  4. Sapporo, Japan (Media Arts)
  5. Baguio, Philippines (Crafts and Folk Arts)
  6. Kuching, Malaysia (Gastronomy)

In addition, almost 50 Filipino cities were in attendance, as well as national government agencies such as the Department of Tourism and Department of Trade and Industry, with further representation from the academic world.

Sapporo was able to present a number of their latest successful UCCN initiatives, such as the 2022 Bread of the Creative Cities project and the 2022 Education for Creative Talent programme alongside the special CG feature created during the workshops.

They also introduced their principal collaborative project with fellow Media Arts cities “City to City,” a co-creation programme consisting of networking and partnering between selected artists from each city, coming together to make a joint piece of media arts work.
