Multilingual Disaster Support Center

In the event of a major disaster, the “Multilingual Disaster Support Center” will open in the Sapporo International Communication Plaza in order to provide swift support to foreign nationals who may feel helpless due to the language barrier.

In a disaster, the Sapporo International Communication Plaza Foundation will:

  • 1) update information on the disaster in simple Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean and more on their homepage, Facebook, through their Multiple-Language Information Services and more.
  • 2) have a support desk for foreign nationals
  • 3) visit evacuation centers to check on the evacuated foreign nationals, and also provide counsel for those living in evacuation centers.

Additionally, during ordinary times, several initiatives are implemented such as distributing the Disaster Response Pocket Guide available in five different languages at ward offices, the Sapporo International Communication Plaza, and other places, and making sure that the signs at evacuations shelters are available in six different languages.
