SCIPH-Outline

Outline of Sapporo City Institute of Public Health

The Sapporo City Institute of Public Health was established in April 1962 (then called the Hygiene Laboratory) as a test and research center that could also collect, analyze, and provide health information, and thus preserve both public health and the environment. As a scientific and technical cornerstone of the public health administration, the institute has provided scientific data gained through cutting-edge technologies and has contributed greatly to public health administrative policy.
Demographic changes in Japan and globalization have brought about a diversification of the public health administration's mission, and this is bringing considerable change to the environment in which the institute operates. The globalization of environmental conservation and the need for prompt countermeasures to such issues as emerging and reemerging infectious diseases and imported food are but a few topical pressures. An aging society with lower birthrates is also a driving force.
By incorporating leading-edge technologies and strengthening its cooperation with other research institutes, the Sapporo City Institute of Public Health is meeting the needs of the times and is working hard to further improve the quality of its services and to thereby protect the public health and ensure a pleasant way of life.
