Regarding Types of Emergency Alerts

1 Disaster prevention & weather information

 Advisories, warnings, and emergency warnings are issued as in order to prevent disasters from heavy rain and storms. Danger levels increase in the order of advisories, warnings, and emergency warnings.

Emergency Warning System

If phenomena are expected to be of a scale that will far exceed the warning criteria

Category: heavy rain (landslide, flood damage), storms, blizzards, heavy snow, waves, storm surges


When a serious disaster may occur

Category: heavy rain (landslide, flood damage), floods, storms, blizzards, heavy snow, waves, storm surges


When a disaster may occur

Category: heavy rain, strong winds, snowstorm, heavy snow, waves, storm surges, thunder, melting snow, thick fog, dry weather, avalanche, low temperatures, frost, icing, snow accumulation

2 Earthquake information

Immediately after an earthquake occurs, information is issued on seismic intensity and arrival time and location of strong shocks in various places.

Emergency earthquake alerts will be issued through TV, radio, and mobile devices when the maximum seismic intensity is expected to be lower 5 magnitude earthquake or higher.

Information distributed by Sapporo (Municipal)

When advisories and/or warnings on heavy rain, flooding etc. have been issued by the Japan Meteorological Association and there is further increased risk of disaster, evacuation warnings may be issued by the City of Sapporo. Evacuation information, is divided into three stages according to the risk severity.

Evacuation preparation notification/ early evacuation of the elderly

Calls for preparation when disaster is expected. Those who will take more time to evacuate should start evacuating now.

Evacuation Warning

When the likelihood of disaster striking is extremely high, should evacuate as soon as possible.

Evacuation order (emergency)

When likelihood of death or injury is extremely high, or a disaster has already struck. Those who have not yet evacuated, should get to a safe place immediately.

Information distributed by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency(J-Alerts)

Information will be sent out on ballistic missiles, tsunami warnings, and emergency earthquake alerts and other situations where time is extremely limited. Area mail and emergency alerts will be delivered to your phone when using J-Alerts (a national, instant alert system).
