Post office service

Post offices and mailboxes can be identified by the red 〒 postal symbol.

Domestic mail service

  • Postage stamps
    Stamps are available at post offices, convenience stores, and other similar establishments.

  • Postcards
    To mail a postcard, take it to a post office or drop it into a mailbox with a ¥52 stamp affixed. Post offices offer pre-stamped postcards.

  • Letters
    To mail a letter, take it to a post office or drop it into a mailbox with stamps for the applicable amount affixed.
    Items of up to 60 cm in length and up to 90 cm in combined length, width and thickness, and up to 4 kg in weight can be sent as letters.

  • You-Pack service for small parcels
    Parcels with a combined length, width and thickness of 170 cm or less and a weight of 30 kg or less can be sent as You-Pack items. Postage is determined by the combination of weight and destination. Such parcels can also be sent under refrigeration.

  • Special delivery
    Urgent mail can be sent via special delivery, or sokutatsu, for an additional charge. This service can be requested at post office counters.

International mail service

  • Postcards
    Postage costs ¥70 for airmail anywhere in the world and \60 for sea mail.

  • Letters
    Items of up to 60 cm in length, up to 90 cm in combined length, width and thickness, and up to 2 kg in weight can be sent as letters. Postage is determined by a combination of weight, destination and delivery method (airmail/sea mail).

  • Small parcels
    Items weighing 30 kg or less can be mailed. Postage is determined by a combination of weight, destination and delivery method (airmail/sea mail/Surface Air Lifted (SAL) mail).

  • Express Mail Service (EMS)
    This international mail service is the fastest way to send items weighing 30 kg or less. Shipments can be tracked through the Internet.
