Information on the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake

To everybody supporting Sapporo,

On behalf of Sapporo City, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of those around the world who have offered words of encouragement following the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake that struck in the early hours of September 6th.

After the earthquake, many parts of Sapporo were left without electricity and water. We are fortunate to report that, at present, with the exception of areas that were especially affected by the disaster, these issues have been resolved. We have secured a stable power supply, so the lights in the city are as bright as ever. There have been no logistical problems, and life is returning to normal.

In addition, hotels and tourism spots are open for business, and all Sapporo public transportation are running again, so we hope to greet everyone looking to come to Sapporo, and we wish you a pleasant stay.

Sapporo will continue its efforts in maintaining a safe and comfortable environment to ensure an enjoyable trip for all visitors. As Sapporo rebuilds, we believe welcoming tourists to the city will be its greatest source of strength at this time.

We look forward to your continued support.

Mayor of Sapporo    Katsuhiro Akimoto
